Value for Your TAX Dollar
I will work to ensure better value for our tax dollars. The city's 10-year financial plan, calling for a 7% annual increase in the tax levy for the next ten years, is unaffordable, unacceptable and unnecessary from my perspective. In reviewing the 2026 budget I see that from 2018 to 2026 Administration costs have grown from approximately $20,000,000 - 10% of the operations budget to $51,000,000 - 17% of a much larger budget. Actual expenditures on Roads, Police, Emergency Services and other services have only increased by about the rate of inflation while administration costs are up by 150%. Ward One residents pay urban tax rates for rural services. This needs to change.

Responsible Development that Serves Residents
We need a more responsive municipal government, especially when it comes to local development and building permits. I believe that the City government has been focused on urban development and has been choking the life out of smaller communities in rural areas such as Ward One with overly restrictive development rules. We need planning rules that encourage practical rural and small town affordable housing options not just large scale urban developments. We need a municipal government that is working to encourage employers to locate here. Building thousands of new homes without an effective plan to increase employment opportunities is in my view a poor strategy. I have been pursuing less restrictive Rural Zoning appropriate to local Ward One conditions and consistent with provincial policies for a few years now most recently through the Ontario Land Tribunal. I would prefer to do this from the inside the Council Chamber rather than outside. I also want to be involved in the upcoming Official Plan Review. Seemingly boring stuff, but it has a huge effect on people's lives and community health in the long term.

Roads
Safe, well-maintained roads are vital to our daily lives, family safety, and local commerce. I will advocate tirelessly for Ward One's fair share of infrastructure capital to upgrade rural roads, improve seasonal maintenance, and ensure equitable service delivery throughout Ward One.
I constantly hear complaints regarding excessive delays for snow removal. I will work to ensure that standards are set that result in sufficient equipment and operators to meet resident expectations. Of course there will always be exceptional situations where some patience is required.

Emergency Services and Health
I will be supportive of paramedic and fire departments as I understand that when minutes count they suddenly become the most important services to residents.
I will support the successful opening of the Summit Wellness Center. I believe this project whose opening is imminent will provide a huge benefit not just to the residents of Ward One, but also to a much larger area of the municipality. For the most part Medical Services are a provincial matter, but having an attractive functional local facility for medical staff to work in will certainly help to attract needed medical professionals.

Over the Horizon Radar
This project is going to have a significant impact on many Ward One residents and property owners. In terms of dollars invested it will almost certainly be the most expensive project ever in Ward One, though with limited local benefit. I will do everything possible to ensure negative impacts of the over-the-horizon radar installation are minimized and potential positive impacts are maximized.

What I Offer
If elected I will provide the electors of Ward One with a strong voice experienced in research. One that understands budget details and the impacts of by-laws and policies on residents and property owners.
"I will work to ensure Ward 1 taxpayers get value for their money and that long-term policies such as the Official Plan and Zoning by-laws encourage responsible growth in our part of the municipality."
