Why I am running for Ward 1 Councillor
This is not a job for me. It is a mission. I grew up in Norland, attended public school here, high school in Fenelon Falls before graduating from the University of Toronto with an honours degree in engineering. My family has lived in what is now Ward 1 since the 1860s. My wife and I bought the farm we presently live on in the 1980s and have been making maple syrup here since 1988. It is currently the largest maple syrup operation in CKL. We have also run a cow-calf beef operation here the last 15 years. Since moving to the farm in 2011, I have served as a director on the local Chamber of Commerce and have been the Chair of the Haliburton-Kawartha Maple Syrup Producers Association for several years. I want to see our communities thrive. I believe I have the experience and skills required to improve the efficiency, service level and cost effectiveness of our municipal government.

My Experience and Skills
In addition to farming, I bring more than 40 years of work experience in the private sector, including project management, people leadership, budget responsibility, regulatory interpretation and compliance, setting inspection and repair intervals for large fleets of equipment (replacement value more than a billion dollars) , creating efficient work processes and quality control programs, and identifying and implementing cost reduction opportunities. I am a registered professional engineer. I have been certified in both the DMAIC and DFSS Six Sigma process improvement systems and have successively completed ISO 9001 lead auditor training. That said I also understand that one does not always need to go through structured cost reduction programs to solve problems. Talking to the people doing the job, understanding their frustrations and what wastes their time, frequently will identify improvement opportunities.
I am a detail oriented person and have extensive experience with regulatory interpretation. I have served on a couple of Transport Canada Consultative Committees and CGSB technical committees updating the rules established for the equipment used to transport dangerous goods by rail.
I believe in collaboration to resolve problems, but I am willing to stand my ground when necessary. On a personal level I have successfully taken the Canadian Revenue Agency to Tax Court representing myself. CRA appealed to the Ontario Superior Court but their appeal was dismissed.
